Good morning. It's July 8th — let's begin where we always do: on this very date in history.

📅 On This Day — July 8

🫐 (It's also National Blueberry Day — toss a handful on your morning yogurt and call it self-care.)

  • 1969 — The first U.S. troops began withdrawing from Vietnam, an early step toward the long war's end.

  • 1997NATO invited Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic to join — its first expansion into the former Eastern Bloc.

  • 2005 — Marvel's first family hit the big screen as Fantastic Four opened in theaters.

  • 2011Space Shuttle Atlantis thundered off the pad on STS-135, the final flight of NASA's 30-year shuttle program.

Now, let's set the dial back to 2002…

⏪ REWIND: 2002

George W. Bush is in the White House and a nation is still finding its footing after 9/11, a first-class stamp just jumped to 37 cents, gas runs about $1.40 a gallon, flip phones and pocket-sized iPods are the gadgets to have — and between blockbusters and a brand-new talent show, America is more than ready for a fun summer.

📰 The Headlines The whole country is hooked on a new summer talent show called American Idol. A sharp-tongued British judge named Simon Cowell is skewering hopefuls, viewers are voting by phone, and a Texas cocktail waitress named Kelly Clarkson is fast becoming the one to beat.

🎬 At the Movies Still swinging through theaters is Spider-Man — Tobey Maguire as the web-slinger in the film that shattered box-office records (the first-ever $100-million opening weekend) and kicked off the modern superhero era. With great power comes great responsibility.

🎵 On the Charts Ruling the summer is "Hot in Herre" by Nelly — the sweaty, Neptunes-produced anthem off Nellyville that's on its way to being crowned the song of the summer for the entire decade.

🏆 In Sports Baseball's got a head-scratcher on deck: tomorrow night's All-Star Game in Milwaukee will grind to a 7–7 tie after 11 innings, called off when both dugouts simply run out of pitchers — a finish that leaves the home crowd booing and changes the rules for years to come.

🏰 The Disney Vault Fresh in theaters this summer is Lilo & Stitch, the misfit tale of a lonely Hawaiian girl and a mischievous blue alien known as "Experiment 626." Backed by a soundtrack full of Elvis and the promise that "ohana means family," it's a surprise smash — and Stitch is about to invade the parks, the merchandise racks, and a generation's hearts.
