1996 — NASA announced possible signs of ancient microbial life in a meteorite from Mars — a claim that's still argued over today.
2012 — NASA's Curiosity rover touched down on Mars after "seven minutes of terror," and is still roving.

Cosmonaut Gherman Titov, aboard Vostok 2, has become the first person to spend a full day in space — 25 hours, 17 orbits — and at 25 years old, still the youngest human ever to fly. He even reported the first case of "space sickness," and took a nap in orbit.
🎬 At the Movies Packing theaters this summer: The Guns of Navarone, the WWII commando epic with Gregory Peck, David Niven and Anthony Quinn — one of the year's biggest hits.
🎵 On the Charts At #1, and impossible to sit still to, is "Tossin' and Turnin'" by Bobby Lewis — seven weeks at the top and the biggest song of the year.
🏆 In Sports In the Bronx, Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle — the "M&M Boys" — are neck and neck and both ahead of Babe Ruth's pace, chasing his sacred 60-home-run record. Maris will get to 61 by the season's final day.
