Good morning. It's June 9th — let's begin where we always do: on this very date in history.
📅 On This Day — June 9
1934 — Donald Duck waddles onto the screen for the first time in the short The Wise Little Hen — a debut Disney still marks as the famously short-fused duck's official birthday.
1972 — Elvis Presley sells out four straight nights at Madison Square Garden — his first New York concerts in over a decade, with Lennon, Bowie, and Dylan in the crowd.
1973 — Secretariat wins the Belmont by an astonishing 31 lengths to seize the Triple Crown, the first in 25 years — still the most electrifying performance the sport has ever seen.
2008 — At its developers' conference, Apple unveils the iPhone 3G and the App Store — the day the smartphone truly became a pocket computer.
Now, let's set the dial back to…
⏪ REWIND: 1983
Ronald Reagan is in the White House, a gallon of gas runs about $1.20, MTV is rewiring what music looks and sounds like, and the Cold War runs hot and cold at once. Here's the world that year.
📰 The Headlines The whole country is counting down to June 18th, when a 32-year-old physicist named Sally Ride will rocket up aboard the shuttle Challenger to become the first American woman in space — two decades after the Soviets sent up Valentina Tereshkova. A barrier that had stood since the dawn of spaceflight is about to fall.
🎬 At the Movies Just opened: WarGames, the techno-thriller with a young Matthew Broderick as a teenager who dials into a military supercomputer and nearly starts World War III — mistaking the real thing for a video game. It rattled audiences so badly that even President Reagan reportedly asked his advisers whether something like it could really happen.
🎵 On the Charts Sitting at #1 this week: "Flashdance... What a Feeling" by Irene Cara — the synth-soaked anthem from the movie that launched a thousand leg warmers, and the only #1 of her career (it'll go on to win the Oscar for Best Song). But keep your ear out: in a few weeks, The Police's "Every Breath You Take" takes over and simply refuses to leave.
🏆 In Sports The Philadelphia 76ers have just steamrolled to the NBA championship, sweeping the Lakers right out of the Finals — making good on Moses Malone's famously blunt playoff prediction and finally sliding a title ring onto Julius "Dr. J" Erving's finger.

💡 Health Snap: 1983 was the height of the leg-warmers-and-aerobics craze — but you don't need a headband or a VHS tape to get moving. Put on one song you love and move around the kitchen until it ends. Small and fun beats big and dreaded every time.
