Every day has a story. Discover yours.

Good morning.

Some dates arrive with a surprisingly crowded guest list. October 1 brings us a national park, a people’s car, a championship opening pitch, a royal farewell on a soccer field—and one very familiar galaxy filling both movie houses and record players.

Let’s see what this date has been keeping.

📅 On This Day — October 1

  • 1890 — Congress established Yosemite National Park, protecting a landscape that would help shape America’s national-park idea.

  • 1903 — The first modern World Series began. Pittsburgh won the opener, but Boston came back to take the best-of-nine championship.

  • 1908 — Ford introduced the Model T, the car that would put mass motoring within reach for millions.

  • 1949 — Mao Zedong proclaimed the People’s Republic of China in Beijing.

  • 1962 — James Meredith enrolled at the University of Mississippi under federal protection, integrating the university.

  • 1971 — Walt Disney World opened in Florida, with the Magic Kingdom welcoming its first guests.

  • 1975 — Muhammad Ali defeated Joe Frazier after 14 punishing rounds in the “Thrilla in Manila.”

Now, turn the calendar back forty-nine years.

⏪ REWIND: 1977

The telephone stayed on the wall, television meant three commercial networks, and a movie called Star Wars was still turning summer crowds into autumn lines. Disco shimmered through speakers, while Saturday night offered a family a choice of sitcoms, detectives and a movie on television.

📰 The Headlines

🗞️ Pelé says goodbye—one half at a time

On October 1, 1977, 75,646 people filled Giants Stadium to watch Pelé play the final match of his professional career. The opponents could not have been more fitting: the New York Cosmos and Santos, the only two clubs he had represented.

Pelé played the first half for the Cosmos and scored on a free kick—his final professional goal. After halftime he changed shirts and finished the match with Santos. The rain came, the crowd stayed, and the world’s most famous footballer left the field having literally played for both sides of his story.

🎬 At the Movies

Star Wars was no longer just the surprise of the summer. It led domestic grosses in both September and October, and its original run would reach more than $307 million in North America. By October 1, lightsabers, droids and John Williams’s fanfare had become part of everyday conversation—even for people who had not yet seen the movie.

🎵 On the Charts

The galaxy reached the radio, too. On the Billboard Hot 100 dated October 1, Meco’s disco medley “Star Wars Theme/Cantina Band” jumped to No. 1 for its first week at the top. A symphonic movie score had been transformed into a dance-floor hit.

🏁 In Sports

The Yankees lost 10–7 to the Detroit Tigers at home, but still clinched their second straight American League East title when Baltimore beat Boston. New York would finish 100–62—and then keep going, ultimately winning the World Series.

📺 On Television

On a Saturday night, the remote control was often a person walking across the room.

ABC — Fish, Operation Petticoat, Starsky & Hutch and The Love Boat.

CBS — The Bob Newhart Show, the premiere of We’ve Got Each Other, The Jeffersons, The Tony Randall Show and The Carol Burnett Show.

NBC — The Bionic Woman, followed by NBC Saturday Night at the Movies.

Earlier that summer, Magic Kingdom switched on a new nighttime procession: the Main Street Electrical Parade. Beginning June 11, glowing floats and a synthesized soundtrack turned the park’s main street into a moving ribbon of light—an attraction that would return in different forms for generations.

❤️ Health Snap

A small burst of movement can brighten the day you are already having. The CDC notes that physical activity offers immediate as well as long-term benefits, while adults should generally aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity each week plus muscle-strengthening activity on two days.

Today’s practical move: take a ten-minute walk or movement break, then count it as a useful start—not the whole finish line.
