Good morning—and welcome to a Saturday edition with a Broadway opening, an Olympic first, a vice-presidential resignation and one very big Texas story waiting in 1956.

World Mental Health Day.

📅 On This Day — October 10

  • 1845 — The U.S. Naval Academy was established in Annapolis, Maryland, with an inaugural class of 50 students.

  • 1911 — Chinese revolutionaries launched the uprising that led to the collapse of the Qing dynasty and the establishment of the Republic of China.

  • 1935 — George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess opened on Broadway, beginning a run of 124 performances.

  • 1964 — The Summer Olympics opened in Tokyo—the first Summer Games telecast around the world.

  • 1970 — Fiji became independent of the United Kingdom.

  • 1973 — Vice President Spiro Agnew resigned and pleaded no contest to one count of federal income tax evasion.

Now, let’s set the dial back to 1956...

📰 The Headlines

A Texas epic arrives in New York

On October 10, Giant opened in New York. George Stevens’ sweeping adaptation paired Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor with James Dean in his final screen performance, using one Texas family’s story to confront wealth, race and generational change. Stevens later won the Academy Award for directing.

That same day, New York’s baseball season reached a championship finish across town.

🎬 At the Movies

For the week ending October 10, War and Peace led Variety’s National Boxoffice Survey. This was a sampled key-city chart, rather than a modern all-market weekend total.

Box Office Mojo lists Giant with $32,677,909 in domestic grosses. Its scale was matched by a story interested in what power and progress cost, and it became one of 1956’s defining theatrical events.

🎵 On the Charts

Elvis Presley’s double-sided “Don’t Be Cruel” / “Hound Dog” was part of an 11-week run at No. 1 on Billboard’s Best Sellers in Stores chart dated October 13, 1956. Before the Hot 100 existed, the same single could rule several separate measures of American listening—and this one seemed to be everywhere.

🏆 In Sports

The 1956 World Series ended decisively: Yankees 9, Dodgers 0. Johnny Kucks allowed just three hits in the shutout, while Yogi Berra homered twice. It was the last World Series game ever played at Ebbets Field.

📺 On Television

Wednesday night’s surviving listings offer a compact look at network television in 1956:

  • ABC — Disneyland continued “Rob Roy” with Part 2.

  • CBS — The Millionaire told “The Story of Fred Graham,” and I’ve Got a Secret featured Orson Welles.

  • NBC — Kraft Television Theatre presented “The Murder of a Sand Flea.”

FOX did not yet exist.

🏰 Disney Vault

Disneyland’s “Rob Roy: Part 2” carried viewers into the Scottish Highlands. The two-part adventure was a reminder that Walt Disney’s weekly anthology could move easily from animation to live-action history—and make the living room feel like a Saturday matinee.

❤️ Health Snap

October 10 is World Mental Health Day. The National Institute of Mental Health suggests making time for relaxing activities, including breathing exercises. Try one quiet minute: inhale gently, exhale a little longer, and let the next breath arrive without forcing it.

🎉 October 10 Birthdays
