Good morning.
Some dates bring back a destination. Others bring back the room where you were watching the news, the person beside you, or the voice you heard on the radio.
Today’s journey takes us to a Friday in 2012. The weather was becoming a major story, a World Series was under way, and television offered several ways to spend the evening. First, six earlier October 26 moments.
📅 On This Day
1774 — The First Continental Congress ended its session in Philadelphia. The delegates were still seeking a resolution within the British Empire; the Declaration of Independence remained in the future.
1825 — The Erie Canal opened. Linking Lake Erie with the Hudson River, the waterway gave people and goods a new route across New York.
1955 — Austria’s parliament passed its permanent-neutrality law. It was a defining legal step in the country’s postwar history, distinct from the State Treaty signed earlier that year.
1958 — Pan Am began Boeing 707 service from New York to Paris. The familiar Atlantic crossing was acquiring a different sound and pace as jet travel expanded.
1977 — The last naturally acquired smallpox case occurred in Somalia. That milestone came before the World Health Assembly’s declaration of eradication in 1980.
2004 — Cassini made a close flyby of Titan. Images and radar observations helped scientists investigate the surface beneath the Saturnian moon’s thick haze.
Our historical calendar now reads Friday, October 26, 2012.

⏪ REWIND: 2012
Picture an imagined living room: a smartphone charging nearby, the television remote within reach, and someone asking whether you have seen the latest forecast.
The small screen could travel with you. The larger one could still gather everyone in the same room. On this particular Friday, there was a serious reason to keep checking the news.
📰 The Headlines
Sandy moves through the Bahamas
On October 26, 2012, Hurricane Sandy was moving through the northwestern Bahamas. The National Hurricane Center’s morning advisory placed its center near Great Abaco Island, with a hurricane warning still in effect for much of that part of the island chain.
Tropical-storm warnings also covered part of Florida’s east coast, while watches extended into the Carolinas. Elsewhere along the U.S. East Coast, the advisory urged people to monitor the storm’s progress. The forecast described a wind field expected to grow.
NASA’s Terra satellite captured Sandy that day. The satellite view showed the storm over the Atlantic east of Florida; on the ground, utilities, local governments and residents farther north were preparing for a possible strike.
It matters to keep the calendar straight. On this Friday, the destructive storm had already crossed parts of the Caribbean, but the projected turn toward the U.S. East Coast was still a forecast. NASA’s contemporary account described a possible northwestward turn and landfall on October 29.
Looking back from 2026, it is easy to let later knowledge fill every sentence. The experience of October 26 was different: checking the next update, weighing the forecast and deciding what needed attention before the weekend.
For readers with memories of that period, this is history with a familiar geography. It deserves to be remembered as more than a dramatic satellite picture.
🎬 At the Movies
A Halloween-season leader
For the completed domestic box-office weekend of October 19–21, 2012, Paranormal Activity 4 ranked No. 1 with $29,003,866. Argo followed in second place, ahead of Taken 2.
That is a particular weekend’s ranking, not an annual total—and it is the weekend before our historical Friday, rather than the one still ahead.
The calendar supplied its own mood. A horror sequel, a thriller and an action sequel offered quite different reasons to buy a ticket. Were you choosing the film, or going along with the person who had already decided?
🎵 On the Charts
“One More Night” — Maroon 5
The Billboard Hot 100 dated October 27, 2012 placed Maroon 5’s “One More Night” at No. 1.
A song can be a small, portable piece of a year. You may remember where you heard it more clearly than when: on a drive, in a shop, or coming from another room.
The chart gives us the date. The rest of the memory is yours.
🏆 In Sports
San Francisco takes a two-game lead
The previous night, October 25, the Giants beat the Tigers 2–0 in World Series Game 2, taking a 2–0 lead in the Series.
Keep those two numbers separate: the score described one evening; the Series lead described the work still ahead. On our Friday in 2012, the championship had not yet been decided.
For a fan, an off-night between games can have its own rhythm. You replay what worked, worry about what might change, and discover that waiting is also part of following a team.
📺 On Television
Friday’s national listings offered business pitches, crime stories and a distinctly seasonal touch:
ABC — Shark Tank.
CBS — CSI: NY and Blue Bloods.
NBC — The Mockingbird Lane special and Grimm.
FOX — Kitchen Nightmares and Fringe.
A concise choice of programs, rather than the whole evening’s grid—but enough to bring back the familiar negotiation over the remote.
🏰 Disney Vault
A handmade-looking Halloween
Earlier that month, on October 5, Disney released Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie, a black-and-white, stop-motion animated feature.
Young Victor’s attempt to bring his dog Sparky back to life gave the story its monster-movie premise. Its emotional starting point was simpler: a child who did not want to lose a beloved companion.
The 2012 feature expanded Burton’s earlier short film. Its deliberately monochrome world made an unusual contrast with the bright colors often associated with animation.
This is an October memory rather than an October 26 premiere. As Halloween approached, the film offered a different kind of seasonal atmosphere: peculiar shapes, lovingly made characters and affection beneath the strangeness.
❤️ Health Snap
Start with the serving size
When comparing packaged foods, look at the serving size before comparing the sodium numbers. One package may contain more than one serving.
The FDA’s general label guide considers 5% Daily Value or less per serving low and 20% or more high. Check the amount you expect to eat, too: a label’s serving size describes a reference amount, not a recommendation for your portion.
A useful small habit for your next shop is to compare two similar products on the same basis. The numbers become more meaningful when the servings line up.
🎂 October 26 Birthdays
Mahalia Jackson — would have turned 115 (1911). The gospel singer’s voice also became closely associated with the civil-rights movement. Our 2012 date marked the 101st anniversary of her birth—a reminder that a recording can keep a voice close across generations.
Jaclyn Smith — turns 81 (1945). As Kelly Garrett on Charlie’s Angels, she became a familiar face in television households. She was turning 67 in 2012, with that earlier television chapter already part of viewers’ memories.
Seth MacFarlane — turns 53 (1973). The Family Guy creator also directed Ted, released in 2012. He was turning 39 that year, moving between animated television and a live-action film with a rather outspoken bear.

A canal, an Atlantic flight, a distant moon: today’s earlier dates changed what people could reach or understand. Our 2012 visit brings the scale back to the room where someone was listening, watching and making plans.
