Good morning.

October 3 moves from a wartime rocket test to a pennant-winning swing, a reunified country and a computer problem that had the whole world watching the calendar.

Let’s see what this date has been keeping.

📅 On This Day — October 3

  • 1863 — President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation setting aside the last Thursday of November as a national day of thanksgiving.

  • 1942 — Germany successfully tested the A-4 rocket, later known as the V-2, at Peenemünde. The technology would become both a devastating weapon and a predecessor of later launch vehicles.

  • 1951 — Bobby Thomson’s three-run homer gave the New York Giants the National League pennant over the Brooklyn Dodgers in the “Shot Heard ’Round the World.”

  • 1974 — The Cleveland Indians hired Frank Robinson, making him the American League’s first Black manager.

  • 1985 — Space Shuttle Atlantis began its maiden flight, launching on the military mission STS-51-J.

  • 1990 — East and West Germany formally reunited after 45 years of postwar division.

  • 1993 — Eighteen U.S. service members and hundreds of Somalis were killed in the Battle of Mogadishu.

Now, turn the calendar back twenty-seven years.

⏪ REWIND: 1999

Dial-up modems still announced themselves, DVD players were beginning to edge into living rooms, and shiny compact discs traveled in zippered cases. The new millennium was close enough to feel—and one tiny date problem had programmers, governments and families checking their plans.

📰 The Headlines

🗞️ The Y2K clock keeps ticking

On October 3, 1999, only 89 days remained in the year. The Y2K problem sounded simple: many older computer systems stored a year with two digits, so “00” might be read as 1900 instead of 2000.

The possible consequences were anything but simple. Banks, utilities, airlines, hospitals and government agencies had spent years inspecting software and replacing equipment. News reports mixed practical preparation with dramatic speculation, while programmers quietly worked through enormous lists of date-dependent systems.

The rollover would ultimately arrive without the widespread breakdowns many people feared. That quiet outcome, however, owed much to the unglamorous work already happening in offices and computer rooms in 1999.

🎬 At the Movies

Double Jeopardy remained the movie to beat over the October 1–3 weekend, earning $17,018,808 from 2,884 theaters. Ashley Judd starred as a woman convicted of killing her husband—only to discover that the story was not what it seemed.

🎵 On the Charts

On the Billboard Hot 100 dated October 2, TLC’s “Unpretty” held No. 1 for a third consecutive week. The song turned questions of appearance and self-worth into one of the trio’s most reflective hits.

🏁 In Sports

The Rugby World Cup was only three days old when New Zealand met Tonga in Bristol. The All Blacks won 45–9 on October 3, with Jonah Lomu scoring twice as one of the tournament’s biggest stars began another World Cup campaign.

📺 On Television

Sunday night offered family movies, legal drama, animation and a new emergency-services series.

ABC — The Wonderful World of Disney, Snoops and The Practice.

CBS — 60 Minutes, Touched by an Angel and the television movie Forget Me Never.

Fox — The World’s Funniest!, King of the Hill, The Simpsons, Futurama and The X-Files.

NBC — Dateline NBC, Third Watch and the television movie Road Rage.

Which lineup would have kept your remote on the coffee table?

🏰 Disney Vault

Walt Disney World had just begun its Millennium Celebration at Epcot on October 1. A giant “2000” appeared above Spaceship Earth, while the 65,000-square-foot Millennium Village brought exhibits from countries around the world into World Showcase. The celebration would run for fifteen months under the theme “Celebrate the Future Hand in Hand.”

❤️ Health Snap

A familiar routine still does important work. The CDC and National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research recommend brushing well twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between your teeth regularly.

Today’s practical move: give tonight’s brushing your full attention instead of rushing through it while doing something else.
